My friend's Ithaca 37 has an intermittent misfire. It is a 1974 model and appears to be used very little. I have cleaned and oiled it but the misfire is still there ...........sometimes. When the gun is loaded with 3 rounds, the first one will misfire and the next two will fire. The round which misfires has no indention whatsover on the primer. I have repeated this scenario several times. Thanks for any ideas.

My father in-law has a remmington 7600, in 30-06. It was doing that exact same thing....1st round miss, primer unmarked, the others fired fine.

He took it to a local gunsmith and was told he was oiling it too much and the firing pin was sticking due to too much oiling. It's never happened again.

Not sure if this is gonna be your problem or not, but if so an easy repair. Good luck in sorting this out.

I have disassembled the gun and cleaned and oiled it well. It wasn't dirty to begin with and there was not too much oil on any of the parts. Break Free CLP was used so I'm sure it isn't gummed up. When I shift the first shell in the chamber, I do it briskly and firmly. Still, it doesn't go off. The hammber can be felt falling forward but the primer is not touched.

The only thing I can think of is to try and replace the firing pin spring. If they fatigue, you won't always get enough rebound.

Thanks ravengunsmith. I will take it apart again and remove the firing pin and spring to check it.

you're welcome Doc. Intermittant problems like this are the most frustrating, to be sure, but when it comes to misfires it is often either the spring or the firing pin. Since you had it apart, I seriously doubt you have a broken firing pin. you might want to run a pipe cleaner down the tunnel where the firing pin lives too. That is a tough place to clean.
