disposable gun wipes. At one point or another, we all use them. After a long day of hunting in the weeds, the dew, the dirt or a hot day at the range, your gun is covered in dew, fingerprints, dirt, you name it. And as the owner of a prized gun, you dutifully wipe it down before you throw it into the case. And in most cases, you will use some form of gun wipe, either silicone or disposable. They do work well, but let's face it, the biggest problem is that they are, well, disposable. You can run out of them and have to purchase more. Well, I came up with something that I think works pretty well. A reuseable gun wipe. It is easy to make and will last. the first thing you need to do is go to an auto parts store and get a real leather chamois. No a synthetic, or a microfibre. They don't last and will fall apart. it is 24x24 like many are, cut it into 8x8 squares. that is more than enough to do the job. You will need to order a bottle of brownell's #2 rust preventable and you can purchage a pint of it here: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1124/Product/RUST-PREVENTIVE-No-2-trade-
you will also need a good bottle and optionally a a small felt pad that you can cut to the diameter of the bottle. I use a small mason jar and felt boot insole. Now, what you do it soak the chamois and then squeeze out all of the excess. (do this over a sink or a toilet) You don't need much to wer the chamois but you want it moist and have total coverage. Then take your felt disk you cut to fit and soak it until it is saturated but not dripping. inset that to the bottom of the jar. Now when you store your chamois, it will contact the felt and draw out a little of the rust preventative to help keep it wet. To use, just apply very light pressure and let the cloth do the work. be sure to wipe away any excess and all the of day's crud will be wiped away and a fine film of protection will be left in its place. When the felt runs dry, just recharge it with more fluid.
Now eventually the chamois will get really dirty. At that time yea, you do have to throw it out, but I would guess that will take a few years and you will have several more to go through before you run out.

Thank you for a very useful idea! Seems with prices increasing on everything that every dollar saved equals more precious range time. I'll have to give this a try.

You are very welcome. Just remember to have the chamois lightly moist and just light pressure and it will do the work. I actually came up with this because I kept running out of those disposable wipes and I figured I didn't want to keep slopping oil on my gun. Just remember to keep the cap on the bottle tight. It is a bit volatile and can evaporate. Which is what you want on the gun, but not out of the bottle.

That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing. We just always used an old sock or hand towel with 3 in 1 oil or G96 or something similar. But I like this idea!

I went to the sheepskin wash mit (real one) cut it apart and made a pad about 4x6. I worked RIG into the wool and use that for wiping the guns down.
