Hello all,
I'm new to this site; looks interesting.
I'm buying an Ithaca mod 37, has the corn cob fore stock and the butt stock is not checked, it is smooth. This seems unusual as most stocks I've seen are checked. Can anyone shed some light on this? Don't have serial number yet but is in this range 638900.
I would be bummed out to learn this was a replacement stock; I'm hopeful that it is not.

during the 60s uncheckered stocks were common..
however 638xxx would put the gun at 56 and they had checkered stocks |

Thanks for the feedback. This 37 will arrive with a Deer Slayer barrel w/rifle sights and additional inter changeable 30" full choke barrel. Paid $300 plus shipping.
I hope the serial number falls within the range you mentioned. |

Actually the plain wood stocked guns with the corn cob fore arms were called" field models" they were made from the mid 50s to the early to mid 60s.

55 was the year of the big change. Checkering was dropped on the standard models, the ray bar front bead was added and magazine cap leverage pin was dropped. The top of the receiver went from a checkering pattern to straight groves cut in the metal.

i'm thinking it was 58 when they made the switch
i know 58 is when they went with the groved beavertail as standard therefore the brainfart |
