Did Ithaca ever put choke tubes into their shotguns from the factory prior to interchangeable barrels? I came across a rather nice old ithaca at my local gun shop the other day, and it had a serial # somewhere in the 600,000's and choke tubes! Normally I would just think that is aftermarket but there was some peculiar things about it. For one, the end the barrel had a bulged contour, like it stuck out from the rest of the barrels contour. I'm sure it wasn't a poly. What I'm wondering is if this is a factory job here, I can't see how any gunsmith could or would bulge out a barrel to put tubes in it. That just seems unsafe. I cannot find any photos of a similar Ithaca anywhere on the web. For the price it is a very appealing piece but I would like to know if it is safe and if I can find tubes for it.

I haven't run across any, you should go over to the Ithaca subforum on Shotgun World and ask the same question.

To me it sounds like someone put a sleeve over the end of the barrel, maybe ?

I have run across and a friend has one that he had aftermarket thin wall tubes put into.

Sounds close, by the looks of it whoever did the job had some skill. I honestly thought at first glance that it was a whole barrel. I didn't get that much time with it however as I was too busy boondogling the tanker garand someone when through the trouble of making .308 win. I don't think it's worth screwing with for $425. I would send in my 1940 to have it done, but I just can't bring myself to do it. At this point I think I'm just gonna break down and get a new one. Their $800 with brileys from factory and a 3in chamber. For the money that is probably a better choice, and excuse to get a new gun that I won't feel bad about scratching the hell out of.

what gauge shotgun with choke tubes are you interested in ? you know, regarless of gauge, there are plenty of post 855,000 guns around that you can get for not much and then buy an ohio barrel if they one doesn't have choke tubes already.

I watch the sites enough, that if you post or PM me what you want, I will give you a couple listings for at least one of each gauge that would make a nice hunting gun

I like 12ga. All my other shotguns are 12ga and I figure it isn't the time to diversify in this day and age. I'd like a 26in or 28in barrel in IC if possible to come with it. Non-vent rib if possible. My other one is a solid rib and I rather like the sight picture of it. Fiber optics aren't bothersome but I prefer the old fashioned brass bead. If possible i'd like one with a corncob for end, made sometime in the 70's. I hear those are the best older ones. Steel shot safe isn't an issue for me, I don't hunt waterfowl, but that would be a bonus. A deer slayer barrel too wouldn't be bad if it had that either, rifled or smooth bore. I'm looking to spend $350 max at this point in really good use able shape. My 1940 looks brand new and I payed much more for it than $350 and to my knowledge the newer ones have a lower price tag. light wear doesn't bother me either. I'm just looking to use it up myself.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to anything you find.

a couple points from what I have seen

I have not seen an earlier post 855 with choke tubes, I have only seen King Ferry barrels with choke tubes, doesn't mean there aren't any, I have just not seen any. all my choke tube barrels are from the King Ferry era

a gun with 2 barrels is going to a bit more than 350

unless it is a beater it is going to be 350'ish, there was a beater with tubes at a local pawnshop. I will go see if it is still there, but I think it is gone.

if you up your limit a little you will get a much better gun, you were mentioning an ohio built gun, they are $800.00'ish. for 400 you can get a really nice gun such as this one

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =372035854

here is one that fits your price range, but it is a model 87, same gun, just renamed before it was renamed back

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =371316253

you would need to contact and ask them what they mean about their update, it doesn't have long left on the auction

a little more

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =372019182

this company has some used 12's you would need to call and if fixed or choke tubes

http://www.williamsgunsight.com/

I bought a 1966 with full choke barrel, sold the barrel and bought a King Ferry VR barrel with choke tubes. That is how I got mine (actually I have 2 16ga acquired this way) I also have a NIB King Ferry 12 and an earlier 12ga combo that I restocked to look like that Duck Unlimited one.

There is always another one showing up in a day or 2 or 3.

Here is another DU gun, but notice it is priced much higher

http://www.gunsamerica.com/915713794/IT ... LLENT.htm#

another 87 with corncob foreend, but once again 350 max is unrealistic for a better condition, VR with Choke tubes gun
