I just got a new Model 37 28 Gauge and want to get it set up for me. I love how the gun looks and feels BUT I would like to get rid of the padded butt plate and go with just a standard hard plate. I was just wondering if there were any tricks in removing the thick rubber to get to the screws?

There should be a slit in the recoil pad that you can insert your philips head screw driver into. There will be 2 screws.

Hello SILENTSHOK .Welcome to the site.

What grade of 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 and barrel length did you get?

1977 cutcher, thanks found the slits.

28 gauge thanks for the welcome. It's just an A grade, wanted something I wouldn't worry so much about whether it was walking through a wet Milo field or trudging up and down the rocky hills. Just wanted a lite little sharp shooter for upland game, rabbits and such.

I have a 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 as well.Purchased it the first year they were available. In fact it was the first one sold in Canada.Fell in love with the shotgun as soon as I took it out of the box.It is the only shotgun I have used in the uplands since I bought it in 2009.My other 28 gauge shotguns are very envious of it. :)

What length barrel did you get?Mine has the shorter 26 inch barrel.

Yeah, I got the 26" as well. I like the shorter barrels, seem to swing better and get on point quicker for me. Just got back from the range for a shake down run, was 20 of 25 first round and 24 of 25 the second. So it hits what it's aiming at, only misses when the operator screws up. The thing I like over my other 2 28's ( Browning and Winchester) is it's really a 28 gauge and not a 20 barreled down. The less weight and bulk will make a big difference when I'm out in the desert mountains Chukkar hunting all day.

Yes it sounds like you 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 is working well for you.Be sure to let us know when you are able to bag your first game with the shotgun.

Like you I prefer the shorter barrels for use in the uplands.

What are the models of your two other 28 gauge shotguns?

The 2 other hunting 28 gauges I have are the Browning BPS Hunter and Winchester Model 12. Those are going to my grandkids in a couple of years. I also have a Browning Citori that I use for sporting clays, she's a queen though, never see's the field.

We're headed south after the 1st for some duck hunting, hopefully it cools off it's been to hot here lately here in So California. Lots of Pin tails and Green heads on the ponds this last week, so we'll see if we can limit on some trophy ducks.

I had a 28 gauge Browning BPS that I sold sometime ago.For myself I found it too long in the stock.I have a 28 gauge Winchester Model 12 as well.Nice shotgun ,but for field use I find the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 the better shotgun.

What butt plate do you plan on putting on your 28 gauge Model 37?Can you get one that will fit or will you have to customise another butt plate?

Actually I already made a custom aluminum one. All I wanted was something to protect the end of the stock and not add any length. Plus I didn't like how the rubber decelerator pad would grab at my clothes as I would raise the gun into position.

Yes, it will be with me. I've gotten plenty of ducks this season and have weened my shooting down to the 28 for a better challenge.

What are you using in the 28 gauge for non toxic shot on the ducks?

Yes it is.I have four boxes of it ,but have never got around to trying it out, either in the field or on the pattern board.

Be sure to let us know how you make out and good luck.
