I recently acquired a Model 37 20ga. According to the serial number (stamped on the barrel & receiver) it was manufactured in 1949. Sadly, someone chopped the barrel to 18". It's still a very cool little shotgun, but I'd like to find a 28" or 30" barrel. Research tells me that pre 855000 are non-interchangeable. Is that true? What are my options?

That is true. I think your best option is to look for another gun.

If you find a used barrel, it still has to be fitted to your receiver.

Barrels and receivers were matched at time of manufacture. Follow what Walt says, he is the best source for Ithaca information.

You might want to look for a butt stock that has not been cut. Usually pistol grip stocks are fun for a few shots then the novelty wears off quickly.
