I have an Ithaca 37 Ultra Featherlight in 20 gauge with a red grip cap from 1980. The cap has a silver quail insert covering where there is usually a screw to fasten it to the grip on my other Model 37's. How do I get this plate off? Does the red quail insert pry off from the plastic plate frame revealing a screw? I want to refinish the stock after repairing a crack and want to take it off to do a neater job of it. I haven't tried prying for fear of chipping it. Help.

Does anyone know if heat will soften the glue or break the bond? Thanks twistedoak, appreciate the first clue.

Heat will break the bond...but watch that you don't destroy that red quail.

I'll try a hairdryer and poke gingerly. If it works, I will report back.

Hair dryer on high on the golden quail for about 4 minutes, then a sharp thin bladed jack knife point carefully inserted into the joint, stuck into the clear plastic insert edge and pryed. Slowly but surely it broke free revealing the gold/silver sided mirror plate which came out easy and voila, the screw. Thanks for the help.
