Okay, I'm a barrel hoarder, I admit it. I have five barrels now for my Ithaca '37 Magnum Model. The latest is a 20" cylinder bore barrel I got on Gun Broker last year for the total sum of $100.00 shipped! The gun originally came from the factory with a 30" Vent Rib full choke barrel. In the last two years, I've added a new 26" VR Upland game barrel with interchangeable chokes, a Deer Slayer 20" smoothbore, Deer Slayer 20" rifled, and the 20" "riot" barrel.

The rest of the barrel collection for the '37 Magnum.

Like new when I bought it from an estate sale last January. Maybe unfired.

I'm kind of a hoarder myself.
the main reason being every gun I have seems to be mod or full choke.
even my ultralight has a mod barrel from the factory instead of the more common IC.
since IC is the "new" mod I need some open chokes.the last 2 chuckers I shot were inedible from the damage I did

I did find a 20 open cyl 24" vent rib that i'll swap onto any of my 20s as needed.
I'm still looking for an open cyl 12g bird barrel.

Keep an eye on gunbroker, sometimes you get lucky.

you won't find any chuckers wild anywhere in PA.

I use them for dog training or rather my trainer has them for training purposes...
place just out past reading.
it is also legal buy your own chuckers or pigeons and release them on state game lands for dog training any time of year

most often homers are used ,but them you don't shoot.
if you can get feral barn pigeons you can shoot them ,
barn pigeons are real strong fliers and if you can get em
are good when breaking a dog to point.

the main point is both chuckers and pigeons are not considered game birds in pa so they can be shot any time of year.

with my training I tend to use the chuckers
mainly because they are good eating as well as legal to shoot.
were at a stage where she is doing everything right and expects me to do my part with the gun.
the problem comes in when I crush the birds with my shot.
retrieving is her weakest link and it doesn't help when you hit a bird too hard.
its like throwing a perdue oven stuffer roaster in a field and expecting a dog to retrieve it .
they just wanna lay there and lick it.

I've yet to test my buck and ball loads in this barrel, something that will be rectified shortly. I loaded 30 rounds this week-end and will test them against my old smooth bore DS barrel which handles these loads very accurately out to 50yds, the limit of testing so far. The original load had the buck behind the ball, but I ran out of .31 balls and didn't feel like casting when I was in loading mode, so I used nickel plated 00buck which won't nest inside the Light Brush wad. The buck was placed on top of a thin card wad over the ball this time. I'm thinking the ball will spread the buck farther as it passes it in flight like the old musket round did.
