All it took was a mention that I was looking for another Featherweight, and zingo! My brother said he knew of a guy who had several he was selling from his brother's estate. I called the man and he had three left, a 1977 Ducks Unlimited, an early 70's standard, and a Magnum Model made in 1981, (sr # begins with, MAG-xxxxxxxxx).
Always willing to give good guns and dogs a home, I let the Magnum follow me home. I'll post pics later, but it's like new, not a mark on it other than a slight bit of bluing rubbed off the slide rail. It's the Magnum "Basic" model, no checkering, ringtail forend, bead blasted finish, 30" vent rib barrel, full choke, no game scene on the receiver, (like an LAPD model with a vent rib barrel). I gladly handed over $350.00 for it!
Now to order a Deerslayer barrel...
M-37 Magnum followed me home!

I ordered a matte finish 26" vent rib barrel for it from Ithaca today, 10 days because of the finish. I expected longer.

My pal has a Ducks Unlimited M37.
What is the skinny on the Magnum unit? Is it chambered for the 3" shells? I think my Super Single in 20g shoots 3" shells too. Insert comical quip here.

When you get your barrel (This is very important) you need to check the head space. Even though the barrels are interchangeable, there was still enough hand fitting involved in the older guns that the headspace may go out of spec. It probably won't, but why guess and take even a 1 in 1000 chance? --Jim

I'll be sure to do it, Jim!

Yes, it shoots 2 3/4 or 3" shells. According to the book on the M-37, they introduced the 3" Magnum Model M-37 in 1978 as a seperate model configuration. The sr#'s of the "Magnum 37 Model" include, MAG either as a prefix, or suffix to the number. Mine has MAG-37xxxxxxx on the receiver and, "Ithaca 37-Featherlight Magnum-12 Ga-3" Chamber" on the barrel. The Magnum, in 12Ga. weighs about 7 1/4lbs, about 1/2-3/4lbs more than a standard 12 Ga M-37 and is longer by 1/4" to accomidate the longer shells. From what I understand, ALL 12&20Ga. M-37's currently produced at Upper Sandusky Ohio are chambered for 2 3/4 or 3" ammunition. |

My Upper Sandusky Def model in 12g has a 3" chamber. Maybe it helps.
Good to know when the Magnum models came around...any information on the book you have your hands on with that data? Insert comical quip here.

With 3'' shells you'll be throwing 12 #00 buck instead of 9 out of your defender! It's the book twistedoak replied about. If you decide to get a copy, order it from Ithaca. It's much more expensive elsewhere. It's very detailed with lots of photos, very well worth what they ask for it. |

you can get them from walt himself over at shotgunworld
