Get a load of Stoeger's Double Defense Shotgun, available in side-by-side or over-and-under options. Some traditionalist critics might argue that it's "hideous," and that a person's better off with the Stoeger Coach Gun—the Double Defense's shiny father instead of the SxS...

So..here's a question for you all.
Are double-barreled shotguns practical for home defense?

It's a mean-looking shotgun!

It is in my personal opinion that a pump action shot gun is most likely the best all round home defense gun. Not only does it hold more rounds but there are very few people on the North American Content that are not aware of what that klunk-klunk sound is when you rack the slide even if they are not into guns. Most bad guys would rather back off then try their luck with a shot gun. In my personal view I would rather try to scare them off before risking collateral damage shooting the bad guy. And if you did end up shooting them at least you gave them a fair warning right? I keep two Deer Slayer Police Specials (his and hers) with bird shot in the magazine tube. I like the bird shot because it is less likely to go threw walls and risking hitting one of my family members or a neighbor next door. I replace the springs every few years just in case.

Cutcher had a point about the sound of a pump, and i'm a traditionalist. I don't get real exited with all the tacticool stuff. That said I don't think anybody can rightfully say that a double barrel isn't good for HD. Many off our ancestors defended home and hearth with double and single barrels back in the day.

I have a 16 double cut down to 26 inched. With 1 Oz of 6 shot, it sure would make a mess of Mr. bad guy.

EVERYONE knows the sound of a pump shotgun cycling in a round. I don't know if everyone here remembers or heard of the case, but not too far from me in Brookline NH, a couple of thugs broke into a random house and hacked a poor woman to death wit ha machete and nearly did the same to her daughter. I had alot of inquiries about home defense after that and many wanted an Ithaca home defense shotgun. Why? because there local chief recommended a pump shotgun for that very reason. When you cycle in a round it means you have the firepower and you mean business.

Having said that, I see nothing wrong with using a double gun for HD purposes. Generally you only need one shot (more than that and you have BIG problem on your hands) they are smaller than a pump (no long receiver to house the action), and you just need to pull a trigger, no cycling needed with no possibility of short cycling a round. still, I prefer a pump over everything, including a pistol and recommend such to anyone who asks me.

+ 1 right on all accounts. I keep a BPS high capacity loaded with high brass 4 shot. I prefer a pump as a defensive gun. I forget who said it, but one of the late great defensive pistol guys said that the primary purpose of a handgun was to fight your way to a long gun. A 12 gauge pump is the herb superb of the defensive guns. But a twice barreled gun will get 'er done too.

A nice Turkey load would be quite devastating at short range.

If anyone ever doubts you regarding the power of a good defense gun, just have them do a web search on the words "trench gun" and tell them to pay attention to how the Germans felt about seeing them in the trenches

Yes it is rather ironic that the people who starting using mustard gas filed a formal complaint with the US government over the use of shot guns in trenches. They also gave a threat that any prisoners caught with shotguns or shot gun ammo would be killed.

I am a am unreconstructed lover of twice barreled shotguns. All I've ever owned have been as God meant them to be, sxs. I'd love to have an old NID, but those are our of my price range. Look fire a Stevens 311. They are tough, good guns, and your younguns younguns will still be trying to wear it out. Older is better in them too, and they can be had for a reasonable price.
