Hi all,
I've been looking at Model 37s for years now and I finally bought one last night at a flea market. It's a 1962 and it's obviously seen some time in the field. Not abused, but definitely has a "patina."
I'm curious to know more about this gun. It doesn't have the typical Ithaca plastic cap on the forend of the stock, nor does the stock have any checkering. It does have a black hard rubber or plastic Ithaca buttplate. Were all 37s of this era this plain or was this one re-stocked at one time?
Also, is there anything I should be aware of with this gun? Any common issues to check? I'm going to take it down and oil it since it's as dry as a bone but it appears to be clean.
I'm assuming a 1962 shotgun would have been built for paper shotshells, so what do you think of having the forcing cone lengthened to accomodate plastic hulls? Worth it?
Thanks for the input in advance.
Dave

Welcome, Dave.
It sounds like your gun is a Standard Grade Repeater. Ithaca made several changes to that gun in 1955, including no more checkering and no more grip cap. That allowed for a price reduction of about $5. The checkering stayed gone until '66, when the "impressed" style was introduced. The gun should have no issue with plastic hulls. If anything, they'll work better. |
