I recently was given this Ithaca side by side. The serial number, 71xxx, places it as a Lewis & Nig 1902 but other sites as a Crass because of the exposed hammers. Hopefully someone out there can help me correctly identify it and the manufacture date as well as any other interesting facts.

That's a real beauty!
I'm baffled by the serial #. It sure shows it as a Lewis. My Crass is a hammerless.
Try posting that on Shotgumworld.com in the "I love my Ithaca" forum. Maybe Walter Snyder can identify it.

Your ser# does indeed show a 1902 mfg date. Ithaca built their hammer(NIG = New Ithaca Gun) and hammerless models together and each gun built was assigned the next available number. The NIG is what you have. The NIG was an improved Baker design and had several changes in it's design between 1888 and roughly 1915, so it was built concurrently with the hammerless guns through the Flues model.

Walt Snyders book on Ithaca guns and Co. history tells most of the story on Ithaca Doubles as well as the model 37 and SS Trap models. There are contradicting ser# tables available. This one has the most accurate data: http://www.ithacagun.com/pdfs/serialnumbers.pdf

Hope this has been some help.

Wow, the help from you folks has been great. I did post on the "I love my Ithaca" forum per the recommendation and received some information. Between both sites, the story of this gun is coming together.

And lastly, would anyone like to take a crack at the value for insurance reasons. I would guess the gun to be 85 - 90 %.

Whare I am, a real life price for this gun would be around $400.00.

I just bought a "Lewis era" double side by side shotgun. It has hammers and it is a NIG with serial number 88246. In close inspection it is not a Lewis or a Crass but it is a "New Ithaca Gun". Great shape and the Nitro Steel barrels are like new inside. Paid $475 for it. Good deal for a gun that is tight and in very good shape Donald

That is in really nice condition. The case colors might be gone, but the engraving is still sharp and clear.
Thanks for sharing
