Ihave a 1910, 12 gauge Flues double barrel. In the early forties my great grandfather returned it to Ithaca for new barrels. The gun is chambered for 3" shells, confirmed by gunsmith, was this unusal?

I would say so. The Flues in not usually considered able to handle strong loads and many folks suggest that modern shells should not be used in these guns.

Right on '77, although if those barrels are from 1940, I would think that target loads would be OK but not much more. And that goes double for steel. In the UK, they actually have a separate proof for steel, so unless they are tell you it is OK for steel or it has been reproofed for steel, I'd say avoid steel
