I am looking at a Field Grade Flues SN 321XXX. Just about all the bluing is gone, and the case hardening is about washed out also. No rust to speak of, and the bores look good. The wood is all original ,and in pretty good shape. Trying to get a idea of a good price on this gun. The pawn shop is asking $499. What would be a fair offer for it?

before you do anything else, check these three things. First, put a snap cap in the left barrel, cock it, put safety on and pull the rear trigger. It should not fire. second, close the gun and give it a good shake. It should not open. Lastly, take the barrels off, hold it muzzle down by the lump. take a pencil and tap each barrel with the eraser. The barrels should ping and not thump. a thump indicates a loose rib or soldering.

After all this, I'd offer $400. That is about what a FLues in "Good" condition is worth.
