Hello all. My 51 Waterfowler started acting up today. After I take a shot the action will eject the hull with no problem. But the next shell will not feed. If the action is worked manually each shell will feed and eject. Any ideas on the problem and solution? Thanks for the help.

Did you try a GOOD cleaning including taking down the action?

Funny you should say that. One of the first things that came into my head was "Did I put everything back the right way after it was last cleaned?" The last time I shot clay birds with the gun it was doing the same thing, only not near as often. So I stripped it right down. I have the Radocy take down guide and followed that. And this is the first time I've shot it since then. I haven't taken it apart yet to see if everything is in the right spot and functioning. (Getting ready for deer season that opens Wensday)

you say waterfowler ..
as in 3" shells? i havn't been able to fully grasp the sequence of actions that take place for a 51 to eject a shell and load another. everything happens so fast ,and its not related to any of the mechanisms that function when you manually pull the bolt back and lock it. you menton shooting clays were you using 2-3/4 target shells? |

Good catch on the waterfowler. A gunsmith once told me that the 3 inch model 51 does not always do well with 2&3/4.

When you clean your "51" stay away from spray cleaners and lubes with a lot of additional compounds. These products will greatly accelerate the deterioration of the plastic bolt buffers. Keep the gun as clean as possible with just a touch of a high quality gun oil (Rem-Oil) works on mine. Also if you check or replace bolt buffers make sure you reassemble correctly or you can break the bolt as well as the slide.
