I just can't bear the thought of using factory made shells for hunting, so it's time to dust off the MEC and get loading! No shortage of components here, lots of Remington STS hulls, Winchester 209's, plenty of Blue Dot, Unique, and 800X. A plethora of wads and gas seals, and a new 25lb. bag of #5 shot!
Who else here rolls their own?
Time to load up for the 2013 season!

I do
but mostly for range use. I have a hard time finding #5 & #6 shot so for hunting I just get a box as needed. |

I lucked into the last bag of #5 shot. I dug through the stack in the gun shop and unearthed what I thought was marked #6, the stamping was blurred and bought it. When I opened it, I measured a few pellets and weighed them...#5!
You're right, game shot isn't common stock for most gun shops, but they'll order it in upon request. A bag of #5 shot will last me several years of pheasant and bunny hunting. |

I had 3 different shops looking for #5 & #6 last year
never did get it. factory loads are ok for me when hunting. its not like I go thru a box a trip and its not like I need "hot" loads or anything. I do just fine killing them at normal speeds |

#5 was once pretty hard to come by, but now it seems more common. I like it more than #4 or #6 and it's very difficult to find in factory loads, let alone getting the weight you want around here at least. I'm addicted to hand loading and casting anyway!

I've been reloading 28 for some time now and just started reloading 20. Target use only, though. I still have plenty of hunting loads.

I notice that most who load for shotgun do so for target only as evidence by the shot stocked at my local gun store. He seems relieved when someone actually buys game size shot.
I just love reloading and casting! The last box of factory loaded ammo I bought was some Federal Hydra-Shocks for my .45 for those situations when only the best will do. |
