Here's a pic of my favorite 9mm...a SIG SAUER P226...made in West Germany in 1988, which I bought used for $400 off a friend whose brother ( deceased ) had carried it alot and shot it little. I just swapped out the original recoil and firing pin springs with a Wollf 15lb (factory standard) package.

The P226 was designed for entry into the XM9 Service Pistol Trials (Joint Service Small Arms Program), which were held by the US Army in 1984 on behalf of the US armed forces to find a replacement for the M1911A1. Only the Beretta 92F and the SIG P226 satisfactorily completed the trials. According to a GAO report, Beretta was awarded the M9 contract for the 92F due to better durability during endurance testing and a lower total package price. The P226 cost less per pistol than the 92F, but SIG's package price with magazines and spare parts was higher than Beretta's. The Navy SEALs, however, chose to adopt the P226 later.

I walked in to my LGS to have my first SIG ordered last year and that's when the SCAR 16s jumped off the wall and into my arms. Alas no SIG in my life yet, but there's a P220 Elite Stainless in my future...

Took her out this morning for a first run. It was 25 degrees outside and I could barely feel my fingers. Didn't get more than 50 rounds through it before I called it quits, but I was VERY impressed with the pistol. It shoots incredibly smoothe and was dead nuts on target. Here's one of my better groups at 25yds...

Looks like she's a keeper!

That P220 is a beauty, LES. If I ever do get around to getting a Sig, that is exactly what I would get.
I figure if you need to defend yourself, you might as well do it with style and class :)

I'm looking at getting into a semi auto pistol. Of everything that I have looked at and handled I really like the P220. Any of you all have any insight to share? How are they as far as reliability? Any issues? Any tips on what to look for?

Thanks

As far as the P220 is conserned, you really can't go wrong. There are a ton of options on the model and mine has been 100% reliable from the beginning. Let us know what you decide...

Thank you Sir,

My Pop turned me on to SIG, so all credit is due to him. He's had a German P226 for years and it goes everywhere with him. It's hard to argue the effectiveness of a sidearm with a retired Ranger Capt., so I had to pick one up. I'm SO glad I did. This thing is one of the smoothest shoot'n handguns I've ever fired. I'll likely be adding a couple more SIGs to the safe before I'm done. If you decide to pick one up, you certainly won't be disappointed.

SIGs are great. Their warehouse is in exeter, NH not far from me :D. You re right, you won't find a better designed or better made handgun anywhere. As good, but not better. Running a shotgun oriented business, I usually don't get doe eyed over handguns but your stainless model is one I can't help but admire.

Really can't go wrong with a Sig. One of the departments I deal with is exclusively Sig 220 and they get on very well. The only negatives I can think of is the high initial price of Sigs and of Sig magazines. But compared to a quality, duty-grade 1911 the guns are actually around the same price or cheaper. The Sig magazines are more expensive, but seem to last quite a long time. I only seen one go down in classes due to a spring breakage.

I just picked up a P220R Equinox limited edition. The biggest differences is that they cut down the beaver tail and ground the sides of the slide flat. I'll post some photos when I have a little time.

Yup. If you're set on an alloy/steel 45, the Sig 220 is hard to beat.

Better overall reliability out of the box than many 1911's. One of the P.D.'s I work with use them exclusively for a duty gun with next to no issues.

The only real negatives are...
High initial cost. Although it's still in the price point of mid-grade 1911's.
HIGH magazine cost. But the Sig factory magazines ARE reliable and very long lived.

That's a good looking Sig you got there. That P220 by all accounts is a fine handgun. Very nice!

I tell you Thren, I have shot all kinds of pistols and this is by far the best feeling one I have ever held. Once you take one down and really inspect it, you can see why they are so expensive. the fit and finish are second to none. Same goes for the mags. The devil is in the details and Sig doesn't overlook any of them.

I was never a super enthusiastic handgun owner, but this one changed my mind. I guess I was just waiting for the right one because I can't say enough good things about it.

Thanks Col, I was lucky to find it and I am glad I did. I figured It would end up getting resold in a few months, but not this one. I've already put 500 rounds through it and it feels great. Thankfully I bought a case of .45 because finding good quality .45 auto is next to impossible now.
