I'm pretty much a novice in this area. I have an old MEC 600jr. for 12ga, but never loaded anything other than what the bar loads that came with it, (1 oz trap load). I'd like to expand to field shells and need a good manual to guide me, what do you guys suggest?
I've been loading metalic cartridge for almost 40 years, but shot shell loading is a whole different world.
Most comprehensive shot shell loading manual?

lymans is a good resource ,
it covers the what why and how of shotgun loads thourghly without going overboard . anything in print will not be as up to date as the powder sites, but its a safe substitute if need be |

Interesting Twisted, I'll have to look for one. thanks. --Jim

I'm surprised there's so few shotshell manuals available. I'll get the Lyman and do some online research. Thanks fellows!

the powder websites generally just give load charts .
aside from that , they are not real helpfull. the lymans gives load charts too, but gets more into componates ,patterns etc if your just getting into the shotshell loading ,the lymans is most important |

+1 on the Lyman manual. I have the forth edition, I need the fith. It's a good read and explains much about shot shells, reloading them, and shotshelll ballistics that unfortunately many are uninformed about. It'll really help you understand he why's of things like shot size, payload and velocity.
What will especially be eye opening for many is reading the charts and seeing the effects of things like muzzle velocity and shot size on down range energy and distance. High velocity with lead shot is a tool ammo companies use to lighten your wallet. But going up a size in shot makes huge differences in energy and distance. These are all things that you'll be able to earn from lyman's manual. |

I ordered the Lyman 5th edition a few days ago and some hulls that were on sale from Ballistic Products.
I'm looking forward to the read. I have a bunch of the powder company booklets they put out for the taking at gunshops, but it's time to really learn something about shot shell reloading since my grandson wants to hunt this year and I'll have two hungry guns to feed. |
|
Good on ya sir. I'm just getting back into it after not reloading for several years. But I won't be up and running until after hunting season.

The Lyman manual is one of the best and most comprehensive for metallic cartridges.
I'd imagine their shotshell manual is at least as good. |

I'm one of the guys who can sit down with a reloading or casting manual and read/study for hours! I'm sure I'll get my money's worth several fold out of it.

Does anyone have the ISBN number so I can order it direct from Barnes and Noble?
I just bought an RCBS reloader for pistol/rifle but am quite curious about shot shell reloading too. Insert comical quip here.

I'll post it for you when it arrives.

Hope these are helpful. |
